US prizes above 5,000 have 24% federal tax withheld at payout, but a jackpot lands in the top federal bracket, so more is usually due when you file. State tax is added on top; some states withhold nothing.

How this estimate is built

Everything is calculated in your browser from published headline rates.

  • Withholding is what the operator deducts before paying you; it is rarely the final bill.
  • For the United States we add 24% federal withholding to the state withholding rate, then estimate the final bill at the top federal bracket plus the state's top rate.
  • Exempt bands (for example Spain's first 40,000 EUR) are applied to each payment, so an annuity can be taxed more lightly than one lump sum.
  • Local taxes, city taxes, non-resident rules, syndicate splits and treaty relief are not modelled.
